Infection begins with attachment to and penetration of, a host cell (usually a post-mitotic cell), followed by integration of the viral DNA with the host DNA. Herpes virus encode enzymes involved in nucleic acid metabolism and DNA synthesis, allowing them to replicate in the nucleus of the host cell.
